Postsecondary Education for Girls in Burkina Faso

Postsecondary Education for Girls in Burkina Faso.

Each year, over 80 village girls in the northern region of Burkina Faso apply for and qualify for acceptance to university or to nursing, midwifery or primary school teacher training but because their families have very limited incomes, only those who receive outside scholarships are able to attend. The selection of girls to receive these scholarships is made by Global NEEED Burkina and the government Ministry of Education. Competition is extremely keen for each of these training programs.  98% of scholarship recipients have succeeded in their training/education and are employed.

Burkina Faso Girls’ Education Fund raises funds in order to provide as many scholarships as possible each year for these girls.  The cost of the scholarships is:

  • University education (3 years): $8,800

  • Midwifery/nursing training (3 years): $4,100

  • Primary school teacher training (2 years):  $1,760

  • $24 provides living expenses for one primary school teacher trainee for one month of training

  • $40 provides living expenses for one nurse or midwifery trainee for one month of training

  • $220 provides living expenses for one primary school teacher trainee for one year of training

  • $440 provides living expenses for one nurse or midwifery trainee for one year of training

  • $660 provides school fees for one primary school teacher trainee for one year of training

  • $924 provides school fees for one nurse or midwifery trainee for one year of training

Donations in any amount are appreciated.
